Afghan Air Force members with the Intermediate Maintenance Squadron at the Kandahar Air Wing, Kandahar, Afghanistan work to fix and maintain an Mi-17 helicopter, Feb. 12, 2013.
The IMS is currently being advised and trained by the 442nd Air Expeditionary Advisory Squadron under the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing based at the Kabul International Airport, Kabul, Afghanistan.
“We’ve made huge progress in training recently by building a centrally located maintenance area,” said Master Sgt. Andrew Ambs, 738th AEAS, talking about the training that he and other members of the 438th AEW conduct as part of NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan. “We’ve made huge strides in the advising of the Afghans.” (U.S. Air Force photo/Capt. 2/18/2013 - KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan -- KANDAHAR AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Every day, members of the 738th Air Expeditionary Advisory Group here advise, mentor and train members of the Afghan Air Force at the Kandahar Air Wing on all aspects of running a wing.
The NATO Air Training Command-Afghanistan advisors work alongside their Afghan counterparts, showing them everything from how to maintain and fly their Mi-17 helicopters to how to defend their base.
"Every single day you have to build relationships," Col. James Brandenburg, 738th AEAG commander, said about the advising mission done at the KAW. "Relationships help to build trust, and that can only be done through face-to-face interactions."
A tenant unit at KAF, the 738th AEAG falls under the 438th Air Expeditionary Wing at Kabul International Airport and is part of the NATC-A mission.
